| Computer resolutions that can help make 2007 error free
It's that most avoided time of year again - time for New Year's resolutions! Rather than resolving not to eat any more chocolate-covered potato chips, I've provided computing resolutions that won't infringe on any kind of chocolate consumption: Renew antivirus software Most antivirus software requires yearly renewal. The New Year is a great time to check up on your contract or renew for the next year a little ahead of schedule. Preparedness may pay off this Valentine's Day if a 2006 version of the "I love you" virus is circulating. With your virus definitions fully paid for and up to date, you won't have to worry about anything but champagne and chocolates for your sweetheart. Run spyware updates weekly Almost every anti-spyware software program will allow automated scans and updates.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20040416/CGALADDINLOGO ) Instead of maintaining desktop-based software that fights spyware gained through Web browsing, ISP customers can depend on GCIS to offer a centralized, value-added security service that inspects and filters Web traffic before it reaches the surfer. Providing both businesses and residential GCIS customers with "clean pipe" Internet access, eSafe SecureSurfing stands as the first- ever technology designed for ISP-managed security services.
European mailer society signs spyware charter
The Federation of European Direct and Interactive Marketing (FEDMA), a common-interest and self-regulatory body for junk mailers, cold callers and senders of unsolicited bulk email, has issued an anti-spyware code warning its members off using intrusive or deceptive technology. FEDMA represents the direct marketing industry, covering email, post, telephone and 'direct response' marketing, and its members include marketing associations from Australia, Canada and the United States as well as countries across Europe. The new charter aims to discourage members from using spyware as part of their information-gathering and advertising campaigns. Spyware tactics defined in the document include deceptive software installation, taking control of computers to send spam and malware, modifying browser and other settings, and hiding or otherwise becoming difficult to remove.
State Reaches Settlement In SONY CD Spyware Suit
(December 19, 2006)—Texas has won a final judgment against SONY BMG Music Entertainment that could mean restitution for Texans who purchased compact discs containing XCP, MediaMax or any other content-protection software with hidden files, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott said Tuesday. SONY BMG will also pay $1.5 million to settle the suits in Texas and another brought in California. The judgment also means SONY BMG must stop selling those CDs and must destroy any remaining CDs with XCP or MediaMax technology. Texas' original suit alleged the company illegally installed spyware on millions of music CDs that Abbott says could make computers “vulnerable to computer viruses and other forms of attack." In September Abbott warned that SONY music CDs with XCP copy protection software could cause problems for consumers whose computers use certain versions of American Online software.
