| Top Ten Viruses Most Frequently Detected by Panda ActiveScan in 2006
A report by Panda Software, US, finds that the absence of large-scale virus epidemics has, once again, been the most notable characteristic of the year. In fact, the list of frequently detected viruses during 2006 has varied little throughout the year. This does not necessarily mean that there is a lower risk of infection. What is happening is that the attacks have become more silent and more specific, as they are increasingly motivated by financial gain rather than simply gratuitously attacking users' computers. A report produced by PandaLabs in the third quarter of 2006 revealed that 72 percent of Internet threats were financially motivated. "Despite what people may think," explains Luis Corrons, director of PandaLabs, "the risk of virus infection is greater than ever.
IS MALAWARE BEHIND UNSUSPECTING SITES?
Spyware and adware researcher Ben Edelman has wriiten in his report that Web sites with security certificates are not as safe as they claim to be. The sites that have the TRUSTe security Relevant Products/Services certificate are more likely to contain badware than Web sites without any security certification, he writes.Adware providers Direct-revenue and Webhancer are using TRUSTe certificates in order to form an image of trustworthiness Edelman claimed. The certificates maynot spell out the actual credibility of the site, he said.Direct-revenue has been charged legally by the New York Attorney General for its adware software. Edelman alleged that Webhancer often is installed without the user's consent.TRUSTe is a certification authority, an independent organisation that gives security certificates to Web sites.
Winners & losers in 2006
Editor's note: Oil prices, scandals and mergers all made news in 2006, but it was the ups and downs of the real estate market that hit American consumers where they live - literally. This is part of a series of business-related stories that cap one year and preview the next. Editor's Note: Oil prices, scandals and mergers all made news in 2006, but it was the ups and downs of the real estate market that hit American consumers where they live - literally. This is part of a series of business-related stories that cap one year and preview the next. Before 2006, if someone in the business world mentioned "backdated options," you'd be forgiven for thinking they were making a joke about Steve Jobs' necktie collection. But in 2006, the big losers were defined by the scandal that erupted over executives who received big paydays due to stock options backdated to low points in a company's stock price.
European mailer society signs spyware charter
The Federation of European Direct and Interactive Marketing (FEDMA), a common-interest and self-regulatory body for junk mailers, cold callers and senders of unsolicited bulk email, has issued an anti-spyware code warning its members off using intrusive or deceptive technology. FEDMA represents the direct marketing industry, covering email, post, telephone and 'direct response' marketing, and its members include marketing associations from Australia, Canada and the United States as well as countries across Europe. The new charter aims to discourage members from using spyware as part of their information-gathering and advertising campaigns. Spyware tactics defined in the document include deceptive software installation, taking control of computers to send spam and malware, modifying browser and other settings, and hiding or otherwise becoming difficult to remove.
